Error The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later

I’m not sure where this fits. I was using the android field app to enter activities while completing field work over the past week. I’m having issues editing the entries on my PC. Keep getting a website error message. “Error …The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later.” I’ve now gotten this error on different days and times. The error is only happening on certain log entries. Some of these entries also did not upload the photos I took. There are entries for the photos in the record, but the files are 0 bytes. It appears the photos never uploaded properly. Not sure what is required to fix the situation.

Hi @graffte - I took a look, and yea that is strange. The errors look like they are due to the fact that the uploaded images are 0 bytes. They occur when the system is trying to generate a thumbnail image.

Can you try deleting those files from the logs and re-uploading? Something must have gone wrong during the upload process. You say you used Field Kit to do the uploads? Maybe they were interrupted?

Deleting the zero Byte photo files seems to have cleared it up. Unfortunately, I also lost the photos. When using the “take picture with camera” button a copy of the photo does not stay in the phone’s photo gallery. This might be a good back up to avoid lost data.

Yikes! Yea that’s no good.

We’ll have to give some thought to that and how to avoid it.

In the meantime, a workaround would be to take the pictures with your phone camera normally (OUTSIDE of Field Kit), and then use add them to logs in Field Kit via the other button (for attaching files that are already stored on your phone).

Sorry I’m just seeing this and that you had such trouble @graffte. We are planning an overhaul of our image storage this winter, so hopefully it should resolve issues like this. Part of the problem is that we’re restricted in how much storage space we can use for images, but we already have some ideas for how to work around this more safely to ensure against data loss; we just need to implement them.

It would be good to improve photo support. I tend to take photos a lot to document what I’m doing. Saving to phone and then upload is possible to avoid losing photos. However it adds more messing around in the field when you are trying to get field work done. If it auto saved to phone, that would be okay.

This overall is a great tool for me. Glad to see the constant support and improvement.

Just tried to upload a log this evening. Got a bunch of network error messages. Whats all this about?

Error while syncing “End point Rye seed level at Rt40”: Network Error
Error while syncing "Rye seeding ": Network Error
Error while syncing "Finished Rye ": Network Error
Error while syncing "Cover crop ": Network Error
Error while syncing "Wet area reclamation ": Network Error
Error while syncing “Checking on Rye cover”: Network Error

Hmm, well, the nondescript “Network Error” message can sometimes indicate a lack of network connection. Were you out of wifi/cellular range when it occurred? Also, were these all from one sync request, or did you make multiple attempts?

One synch request. I tapped the synch icon in corner of app screen and it ground away for a long time. Next morning saw the series of error messages. I was close to router in the house and had working connection for other phone apps. So was surprised to see the issue.

Most of these had already been synchd before.

Not to pile on but I have been getting http400 errors with almost anything I try to upload. I did get one log to sync (no images) but the app appeared to behave as if it had not synced. The icon showed synced but it acted otherwise as if it wasn’t.

Any log with images does fail to upload and all my images were done the same as @graffte.

Oy, I guess I’ll have to dig into this deeper. I’m currently “out of the office” but will take a closer look when I get back Mon and can try to reproduce this in my development environment.

My guess is this is related to some improperly formatted data that we missed in our latest migration to 0.7.0 (I assume that’s the version you’re using; let me know if not). It would be helpful to know if this is isolated to logs with images attached, or other specific types of data, like GPS coordinates.

thanks, yes I’m running 0.7.0
I’ll go back a take a deeper dive into the logs versus photo content. In general, almost all my logs have a photo attached so high likelihood.
