How to add fertilizer in farmOS

How should I add fertilizer logs in farmOS?

I think the correect way would be to fertilize the seed asset, and not the field asset.
But what about slurry applied before planting. Then I don’t have a plant asset yet. And it’s acutally the land asset that is fertilized.

Is there a wrong way of doing this?

In cases where I’m fertilizing before planting, I’ll reference the land asset as the “receiver” of the input. You could also reference the plant asset too if you want to, and if you have a plant asset created (planning ahead). It’s sort of up to you what your convention will be, but I like to think of the soil itself as the thing I’m feeding… the soil then feeds the plant.

Just to be explicit (Mike alluded to it), there is an “Input Log” type that works well for that kind of scenario.

I wouldn’t say “correct”, but that’s another way to do it.

Personally, I would use an input log every time and try to reference both the plant asset(s) and the field/bed (land) asset(s) to which the input was applied. That way you can look back and see both that the soil in that area was amended and what crop was the target.

Maybe there’s some fertilizer types where that wouldn’t make sense (e.g. a foliar spray), but generally that seems like a good strategy to me.
