How to keep track of the source of my plantings?

Hello,

Most of the seedlings that become Plants in my vegetable garden come from a handful of little suppliers in a farmer’s market. I would like to keep track of where each of these seedlings were sourced from.

But currently I can’t seem to find the proper way to do it. For now I’ve been adding that information as unstructured data in the Transplanting Log notes field but this doesn’t let me search or filter by supplier.

What is the right way to accomplish this? I expected to have a Source field somewhere like I find in Seed but I don’t find one.

Should I consider creating my seedlings as Seeds assets? This misrepresents the asset type and seems like adding unnecessarily complexity just to be able to get access to the Source field, though. I’d like to keep my workflows as simple as they can possibly be.

I’d also like to avoid introducing Inventory steps into my workflow since I always immediately plant all the seedlings I buy. So, again, I fear that would be unnecessary complex.

I found this in the documentation, but it doesn’t seem to solve my concern:

If you are direct seeding into the field, you may only use the seeding Log. If you are purchasing starts from another grower, you may only use the transplanting Log. If you are starting your plants in a greenhouse and then planting them out in the field, you may use both a seeding and transplanting Log.
Together, seeding and transplanting Logs allow you to keep track of where a plant has moved throughout its life.

For now, I can only track where my plan has moved from the point I transplanted it to my garden bed. I’d like to track it from its origin.

Can someone please help me figure this out?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like good reasoning for adding this!

We will also be generalizing the “Purpose” field on Inputs so that it is available on other logs (and converting it to a taxonomy reference). It feels like adding “Source” to more logs is a good idea too. I wonder if it would be useful on other log types beyond Seeding and Transplanting?
