Is it possible for users/roles to have access not to all areas, but only those assigned to them?
And accordingly only related to the area assets and logs

Not yet - but that would make for a great feature request. 
It will be easier to achieve this in farmOS 2.x, which is in active development right now (but not ready for use). Areas are becoming assets, so we will be able to explore per-asset access controls in more detail and more broadly!
