whenever i rotate the dashboard map on an iphone the outlines and the underlying (satellite) map rapidly fall out of alignment and cannot realign - it can only br done by reloading the page

Are you using the Google Maps module?
There is a known-issue with Google Maps breaking the map when you use the rotation feature with it.
Google Maps are not officially supported by farmOS anymore, due to Google’s unwillingness to play nicely with open source projects like OpenLayers. There are lengthy discussions on this topic I can link you to if you’re interested.
We created a separate add-on module for folks who want to use Google Maps with v2, and are willing to live with the bugs: farm_map_google | Drupal.org
Yes I am using Google Maps. Tried to use Mapbox but whenever i insert the mapbox token the tools menu item goes wiggy
